Life as a Student Nurse in Mental Health

When one thinks of nursing, the first things that come to mind include RNs, RPNs, and NPs. Another important part of the nursing practice is student nurses. The student nurse's role is similar to that of an RN or RPN, with a smaller scope of practice. However, one challenge student nurses face is not only operating in a healthcare system, but a school environment as well.

It is common for student nurses to feel adversity within clinical practice as there are frequent misconceptions surrounding student nurses. For example, some nurses on a unit may scrutinize student nurses for having a large deficit in knowledge or being incapable of doing specific tasks. However, it is important to remember that nursing students are students for a reason. They are still learning the role of an RN and are navigating their way through the healthcare system to the best of their ability.

Speaking from personal experience as a student nurse, so far, I have had clinical experience in surgical, medical, pediatric, and obstetric units. Throughout my clinical placements, I have picked up many skills that I have learned from other nurses or health care providers on the units that have increased my confidence in myself as a student nurse. My critical thinking and clinical decisions have improved tremendously with the help of my clinical tutors, preceptors, and staff on the unit.

There are some days when I have challenges going into clinical due to conflicting responsibilities in school, work, and social/personal life that could interfere with my shift. However, it is vital to put the patient at the center of care, whether an individual is going through challenges within their own life. By setting personal life aside, the best patient outcomes will arise. It is also still greatly important to remember that self-care should be practiced at all times. Before taking care of a patient, you must take care of yourself first.

With every learning experience comes its own set of challenges. As a student nurse, do not be afraid to ask for guidance, as we are all still improving our clinical skills and expertise. Remember, we are building a foundation for the future of our healthcare.
